Eco Club

The Skipton Academy’s Eco Club is a long-running extra-curricular group which aims to increase the sustainability of TSA whilst also providing students with opportunities to be involved in a range of varied, engaging activities. The group has a range of members from across all year groups and works collaboratively with staff to develop plans and initiatives which continue to drive improvements in sustainability and environmental impacts. The Eco Club is part of a wider Eco Schools programme, run by Keep Britain Tidy. Since the club started, it has gained a range of awards and recognition, including achieving the Eco School’s Green flag award.

The Eco Club has achieved a range of successes during its time, including:

  • Gaining funding to install recycling bins in every room in school which significantly increased the amount of recycled waste, reducing the amount of landfill waste produced.
  • Gaining funding to purchase school water bottles and to install water fountains around the school to reduce the use of single-use plastic.
  • Being one of a handful of schools in North Yorkshire to achieve the prestigious Green Flag award.
  • Developed valuable links with a number of other schools and organisations to increase the sustainability of other organisations within the Craven region.
  • Planted hundreds of new tree saplings within the school grounds as part of an initiative with Craven District Council to reduce the carbon footprint of the school and have wider environmental impacts on the local area.

The school has a number of exciting plans to further increase the sustainability of TSA, including:

  • Re-developing outdoor spaces in the school grounds to increase biodiversity and encourage students to be able to see sustainability/conservation in action.
  • Working closely with North Yorkshire Council’s sustainable travel team and ModeShift STARS to increase the use of sustainable transport for students and staff while commuting to school.
  • Continuing to reduce the carbon footprint of the school through a range of energy saving initiatives.

Sustainable Travel Map

The Skipton Academy has worked closely with North Yorkshire Council’s sustainable travel team and ModeShift STARS to develop a student friendly travel map to encourage students to travel to school in the most sustainable way possible. The map provides practical information for students along with a detailed map of the Skipton area showing the best routes for students to take if they choose to adopt a more sustainable way of traveling to, and from, school.
