Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance

Our careers advisor will work with the Careers Leader to organise meetings for students and actively promote the options available.

The careers support programme at The Skipton Academy focuses on encouraging each student to consider a wide range of career pathways and provides the support to make their goals a reality.

We achieve this by offering students timely independent careers guidance during one to one career interviews for every student in KS4.

The Skipton Academy is committed to providing careers support and advice.

Dear Year 11 students, parents and carers,

You are warmly invited to attend our Open Evening for prospective sixth form students on Wednesday 13th November 2019 from 6pm-8pm at Ilkley Grammar School. The event is open to students currently at IGS as well as those interested in joining us from other providers.

The evening will consist of introductory talks given by Helen Williams, Headteacher and Mr Gutch, Director of Post-16 with contributions from the current head girl and head boy. These talks will take place at 6pm, 6.30pm and 7pm in B Hall. Students and parents/carers will then have the opportunity to visit subject areas around school to find out more about the courses on offer from both subject specialists and students.

We are aware that there are other Open Evenings taking place on the 13th November so this year we will also be giving an additional talk at 8pm (although subject areas will only be open between 6-8pm). Visitors arriving at 7.30pm would have some time to visit subject areas before attending the later talk.

Our newly redecorated Post-16 area will also be open throughout the evening and in F Hall visitors will be able to find about leadership opportunities, Work Experience, university options (including Oxbridge), apprenticeships and other post-18 routes. There will also be information about our post-16 enrichment offer such as the highly successful EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) and the Sports Leaders qualification. Our very popular iCafé will also be open, serving refreshments and tasters from the post-16 menu.

Transition: Students considering joining IGS for the first time from other providers will also have the opportunity in the Post-16 area to meet students who have done the same thing. They will be on hand to answer any questions about how we support students joining us from other schools. We have given a lot of thought to this over the last year.

Travel arrangements: We understand that travel may be a consideration in your decision about your Post-16 provider. We do not currently offer transport to IGS but will consider doing so if enough students express an interest. If you would like to express an interest in daily minibus transport from the Grassington/Skipton area to Ilkley Grammar School please email giving your present school, a contact name, number and your closest town e.g. Grassington, Skipton, Burnsall etc.

All details regarding the application process, subjects available and entry requirements, as well as further information about our wider post-16 offer, are available on our newly updated section of the Ilkley Grammar School website. All potential applicants are encouraged to go online to find out more.
Whilst we appreciate that post-16 study at IGS may not be appropriate for all, we have worked hard in recent years to ensure that our offer is competitive and caters for a wide range of learners in our community. We very much hope you are able to attend our Post-16 Open Evening as part of making a fully informed decision about your next steps. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 13th November.
Kind regards

Mr J. A. Gutch

Assistant Headteacher, Director of Post-16
