The Skipton Academy Year 7 Catch Up Funding

What is it?

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives schools additional funding to support Year 7 pupils who did not achieve expected standards in reading and/or maths at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2).

Of the students for whom we have data, there were:

  • 12 students not meeting expected standards in Maths;
  • 8 students not meeting expected standards in Reading.

Of the 12 students in total, 9 were below expected standards for both subjects.

 Approach

The catch up funding has been used to support the school’s ‘belong, challenge, inspire’ ethos, working with the students to actively remove barriers to learning. This has been achieved through a combination of incentives targeting specific groups of students with particular needs.  Many of these incentives have been supported through a combination of Catch up Funding and, for example, Pupil Premium.

The following lists the areas that Catch up funding contributed to:

  • Accelerated Reader programme-developing and strengthening students’ reading and comprehension skills, (£1477.00);
  • Success@arithmatic-a program that focuses on core Maths skills, in conjunction with Y7 SoW, (£600 training costs + delivery time at £379 per year);
  • Extra Hour – a homework club staffed by Teaching Assistants that provides bespoke support for students after school with their independent study, (£1516);
  • Additional teaching staff in core subjects with intervention sessions delivered 2 days per week. Sessions run during form time and in lesson time, (£989 + standard teaching costs of approx. £25 per hour).

Impact

The Academy sets its individual targets at +0.4 against Progress 8. We report to parents on a RAG system whereby green represents students working on or above this target, yellow represents students working towards this target and red represents students unlikely to hit this target.

Of the 8 students below expected standard in reading:

All students were above track in English by the end of Year 7, achieving above targeted grades based on their KS2 data.

The Accelerated Reading programme that has been introduced into Y7 indicates that of the 9   students:

  • 7 students made at least 1 year’s progress in reading age.

Of the 12 students below expected standard in Maths:

  • All students were above track in Maths by the end of Y7, achieving above targeted grades based on their KS2 data;
  • In Success@Arithmetic, of the 8 students completing the programme, 5 made extended progress, 2 remained the same as baseline and 2 students had anomalies that have led to further targeted invention this academic year.

The Maths figures reflect the fact that Maths data is based purely on the outcomes of formal assessments sat under exam conditions and not class or homework, (without including Success@arithemetic data).

Literacy Catch-Up Strategy

 

  1. Quality first teaching and learning and staff training ensure that work is suitably differentiated to support the development of reading across the curriculum;
  2. All Year 7 students undergo a reading assessment at the start of Y7 . Identified catch up learners will meet the SEN team prior to joining the school and will be targeted for support at the start of the new school year;
  3. Nurture group for students identified as needing additional booster lessons in English in place for at least the first term (or continuing if progress is slower than expected);
  4. Paired Reading Club mentor programme for literacy catch up cohort;
  5. Regular analysis of progress data is undertaken to ensure students are receiving appropriate and successful interventions;
  6. Use of Read Write Inc Fresh Start;
  7. Extra Hour- a homework club staffed by Teaching Assistants that provides bespoke support for students after school with their independent study;
  8. Additional teaching staff in core subjects with intervention sessions delivered 2 days per week. Sessions run during form time and in lesson time.

Numeracy Catch-Up Strategy

  1. Small class sizes in mathematics for Year 7 students identified as requiring catch up for numeracy;
  2. Quality First Teaching of numeracy skills throughout all mathematics lessons to target areas of weakness identified in initial Year 7 baseline assessments;
  3. Delivery of high quality numeracy intervention for key students in the catch-up cohort;
  4. Regular analysis of progress data is undertaken to ensure students are receiving appropriate and successful interventions;
  5. Workbooks purchased to support students develop their skills.
