Adventures Beyond the Classroom Walls
The Skipton Academy recently hosted its annual Challenge and Celebration Week, a much-anticipated programme of enrichment designed to give every student memorable, character-building experiences far beyond the classroom. The event brought together hundreds of students and staff, who immersed themselves in outdoor adventures, cultural explorations, creative workshops, and in-school challenges.
Each year group embarked on a tailored programme to suit their stage of development:
-
Year 7 – The Big Mix: A carousel of exciting activities, from Clip ‘n’ Climb and Ilkley Cinema to water sports at Allerton Park and a high-rope adventure at Go Ape Blackburn. Students ended the week with a Problem-Solving Day on site.
-
Year 8 – The Big Trip: A four-day London residential packed with culture and history, including visits to the Science and Natural History Museums, the Tower of London, a Thames River cruise, a West End production of The Lion King, and London Zoo.
-
Year 9 – The Big Outdoors: A residential at Hawes End, Cumbria, where students tackled canoeing, ghyll scrambling, climbing, and mountain walking amidst the beauty of Derwent Water.
-
Year 10 – The Big Work Experience: A chance to gain practical insights into the world of work by joining local and regional employers, helping students grow in independence and explore future careers.
Additional themed opportunities enriched the week even further. Key Stage 3 students enjoyed The Big Ride with day trips to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Skipton Cinema, The Big Skipton Spectacular with activities such as tree-top climbing and cookery, and The Big Task, a rotation of in-school STEM and creative challenges.
For Key Stage 4 students, horizons broadened internationally. The Big Moroccan Adventure offered a 14-day expedition across Morocco, combining trekking in the Atlas Mountains with community service. The Big Cornish Canvas brought creativity to life in Cornwall through photography and design, while The Big Parisian Adventure whisked students to Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, and Disneyland Paris.
The purpose of Challenge and Celebration Week is rooted in the Academy’s mission to provide a well-rounded education. These experiences strengthen essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, resilience, and confidence—qualities that last far beyond school years.
Assistant Principal Mr. Khalil summed it up:
"We believe that learning happens everywhere, not just in the classroom. Challenge and Celebration Week is an opportunity for students to experience something new, develop character, and celebrate their successes. We are immensely proud of how all our students conducted themselves and embraced the week with enthusiasm and maturity."
