Former student offered a place at Oxford University

Billy Caswell, a former student of Skipton Academy, is celebrating after being offered a place at the prestigious Oxford University to read English. Billy left The Skipton Academy in 2021, after securing an amazing set of GCSE results which included 2 grade 9's in both English Language and English Literature.

Billy progressed onto Ilkley Grammar School Sixth Form, where he studies, English Language, English Literature, Sociology and Government and Politics. Ilkley Grammar School offers outstanding teaching, specialist pastoral care and a wide range of academic and vocational courses to meet the needs of their students. This is also complemented by extensive enrichment opportunities including sports leadership qualifications, first aid skills, work experience, the leadership of younger students, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and wider life skills. Such provision helps students develop into well-balanced young adults who are not only academically successful but have the skills and confidence to make a positive difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

Billy commented - Getting an offer from Oxford allowed me to dispel some myths that hang around higher education; University is not just for people who come from a certain background, neither are admission teams looking for a certain type of person who fits a certain criterion. Whatever you may be wanting to pursue, whether that be University, College, an apprenticeship, or any other path, keeping your ambitions high, pushing yourself to put in a bit more effort and giving everything a good go will produce results which may surprise you! This was my experience, as I applied to Oxford quite last minute under a teacher's encouragement and with the mindset of "If I don't try, I'll never know!". I'm very grateful for the time I spent at TSA, and for the fantastic members of staff- especially the brilliant English department- who always provided close support, pushing us to challenge ourselves and be more confident in our work. The partnership between TSA and IGS is providing an increasing number of students with an exciting pathway into a vibrant and academic sixth form which opens up a world of opportunities, and I, personally, hugely benefitted from being given this chance.

Mr McManus, Principal at The Skipton Academy, commented we are all delighted that Billy has received an offer from Oxford University, and he really does embody what we stand for as a school. His hard work and dedication are the key to his success and his willingness to challenge himself to achieve the very highest standards will be an inspiration to current students at The Skipton Academy. When we first started our journey as a school the key message, we gave to all students as you can achieve much more than you realise, and Billy is a shining example of that. Well done Billy and enjoy University!
