Bikeability Brings Schools Together

This term, The Skipton Academy proudly hosted a Bikeability session that brought together pupils from local primary schools for a day of learning, teamwork, and competition.

The programme, designed to build confidence and develop safe cycling skills, gave primary school students the chance to improve their balance, control, and awareness on two wheels. It also provided an opportunity for children to experience a positive, active day at the Academy, supported every step of the way by its students.

A highlight of the day was the role played by Skipton Academy’s Sports Leaders, who guided, encouraged, and mentored the younger participants. From helping them navigate the course to cheering them on in challenges, the older students modelled responsibility, leadership, and teamwork.

The event culminated in a friendly competition, with primary school pupils pitting their skills against each other and celebrating their achievements together. The excitement and smiles showed just how much confidence had been gained during the session, and the sense of camaraderie between schools was clear.

For the Academy, the Bikeability event was more than just about cycling. It was about building bridges between schools, nurturing leadership among its students, and encouraging younger children to see sport and physical activity as fun, inclusive, and rewarding.

As one Sports Leader reflected:
“It was great to see the younger pupils grow in confidence throughout the day. We really enjoyed helping them and it felt good to give something back.”

The Skipton Academy looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future, continuing to strengthen ties with local primary schools while showcasing the enthusiasm and leadership of its students.
