Mental Health Matters
Year 9 students recently took part in a powerful and enriching Mental Health Drop-Down Day, built around the theme “Stronger Than Our Struggles.” This special event was designed to provide students with the tools, language, and confidence to explore their mental health in a safe, supportive space.
Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of workshops focused on building emotional resilience. A mindfulness scavenger hunt encouraged awareness and calm, helping students focus on the present moment. Another session, “Stay in the Cool,” taught students how to manage their emotions and choose healthy coping strategies when faced with challenging situations.
A particularly impactful workshop titled “Not the Only One” explored the importance of de-stigmatising mental health conversations. Through role-play and discussion, students practised how to ask for help and how to be a supportive friend. They also used digital storytelling tools to design mental health awareness campaigns, blending creativity with education.
The day closed with a reflective session where students created personal resilience jars filled with affirmations. It was a meaningful conclusion to a transformative experience. We are incredibly proud of the maturity, openness, and empathy shown by our Year 9s. This wasn’t just a one-day event—it was a lasting step towards building a mentally healthy school culture.
