Over 160 Students Trained In Lifesaving CPR

On Thursday 16th October 2025, over 160 students at The Skipton Academy took part in Restart a Heart Day, a national initiative led by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) aimed at equipping young people with vital lifesaving skills.

During the sessions, students learned how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) — practical techniques that could one day help save a life in an emergency. Each session lasted around 45 minutes to an hour and was delivered by trained volunteers from YAS, supported by academy staff.

The atmosphere throughout the day was one of focus and enthusiasm as students practised chest compressions to the beat of familiar songs and discovered the importance of quick action in cardiac emergencies.

Mr Fryer, Assistant Principal at The Skipton Academy, said:

“We’re incredibly proud of our students for engaging so positively with Restart a Heart Day. These are skills that everyone should know — you never know when you might need them. A huge thank you to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service team for their time and dedication in supporting our young people.”

Restart a Heart Day is a nationwide campaign designed to improve survival rates from cardiac arrests outside of hospitals. By giving students the confidence and ability to act in an emergency, The Skipton Academy continues to build on its ethos of Belong, Challenge, Inspire — ensuring students not only achieve academically, but also develop the confidence and responsibility to make a real difference in their community.
