Science Live Sparks Wonder
In January, a group of 43 curious and motivated Year 10 and 11 students had the remarkable opportunity to attend the GCSE Science Live event at St. George’s Hall in Bradford. This event, which drew in pupils from over 20 schools, provided a dynamic and hands-on look at how science works beyond the classroom. Students were treated to talks from some of the UK's most prominent scientists, each offering insights into their research, careers, and real-world applications of scientific theory.
Among the highlights was a talk by Dr Tim Gabriel, a chemical sciences lecturer, who walked students through his diverse professional journey. He emphasised the flexibility and excitement of a career in science, offering valuable advice to those considering STEM fields. Dr Anna Ploszajski then captured everyone’s imagination by combining science with storytelling, explaining how she used materials science during her swim across the English Channel—including how chocolate mini rolls played a surprising role!
The excitement continued with Professor Robert Winston, one of the most recognisable names in fertility and reproductive research. His presentation shed light on how scientific advancement is helping improve lives globally. Professor Sophie Scott then explored the neuroscience of laughter, breaking down how this universal human behaviour ties into brain function, communication, and emotional wellbeing. Students were both educated and entertained in equal measure.
To top off the day, an engaging session by a GCSE examiner provided practical revision strategies tailored to the science curriculum—tools our students will undoubtedly benefit from. The event concluded with a spectacular demonstration of an oscillating chemical reaction by Professor Andreas Sella, leaving students in awe. Altogether, the day sparked deeper appreciation for science and may well have inspired the next generation of researchers, doctors, or engineers.
