Students Conquer Bronze DofE Challenge
This summer was a landmark moment for The Skipton Academy as the school celebrated its largest ever cohort of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) participants. More than 30 students embraced the nationally recognised award, committing to a programme designed to build independence, resilience, teamwork, and personal growth.
The Bronze Award involves four demanding sections - Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and Expedition. Each one challenges students to step out of their comfort zones while developing life skills. From volunteering in charity shops and youth clubs to learning new creative or practical abilities, and from taking part in sports to committing to fitness goals, students displayed determination and perseverance throughout.
The highlight for many was the two-day expedition. This year’s Bronze group journeyed from Grassington to Bolton Bridge, tackling some of the most beautiful yet challenging terrain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Students navigated with maps and compasses, carried heavy rucksacks, set up camp, cooked meals outdoors, and worked as a team to overcome every obstacle.
What made this year’s trek especially remarkable was the weather. The expedition coincided with a July heatwave, with soaring temperatures well above seasonal averages. Despite the extreme conditions, every participant displayed resilience, positivity, and determination. Their ability to remain focused, encourage one another, and push through adversity was a true reflection of their character.
This success would not have been possible without the tireless commitment of the staff volunteers, who supported students throughout their preparation and during the expedition itself. Their encouragement, safeguarding, and guidance ensured the challenge was not only successful but also safe and enjoyable.
The Skipton Academy looks forward to continuing to grow its DofE programme, offering even more students the chance to achieve this prestigious award and gain skills that will support them for life.
