The Skipton Academy Delivers Outstanding RSC-Linked Production of Matilda: Change My Story

From Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th February, The Skipton Academy proudly presented its first major theatrical production since becoming an academy. An uplifting and dynamic adaptation of Matilda: Change My Story was performed in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).

Across all three performances, the show received an exceptionally warm reception from students, families, staff, and members of the wider community. Audiences praised not only the professionalism and talent of the cast, but also the creativity, ambition, and energy with which the story was brought to life.

Many attendees described the atmosphere as electric, with several commenting on the high calibre of acting, the humour woven throughout the show, and the powerful musical numbers that captured the heart of the story. The sense of pride among the school community was unmistakable, as students showcased dedication, teamwork, and confidence on stage.

Reflecting on the Thursday performance, the Principal, Mr M Cook, said:

This production marks a monumental milestone in the history of The Skipton Academy. It demonstrates our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for young people, while championing the importance of the arts in education. I would also like to express a massive thank you to all the staff who contributed, on stage, behind the scenes, and throughout the preparation process. Their dedication truly embodies our school ethos of Belong, Challenge, Inspire, and this performance was a shining example of what can be achieved when our community comes together.

Directed with creativity and precision by Mrs Adams, the performance captured the heart and spirit of the original text while presenting a bold, thoughtful interpretation. Musical direction from Mr Osborn elevated the production further, with standout ensemble moments and confident solo performances receiving enthusiastic applause every night.

The Skipton Academy extends sincere thanks to the Site Team and the many staff members whose hard work ensured the show ran seamlessly. Special appreciation also goes to The Skipton Academy PTA & Friends, whose generous funding made the production possible. Their tireless efforts during the performances raised additional money that will directly support students at TSA.

A huge well done goes to the talented cast, who committed themselves wholeheartedly throughout the rehearsal process. Rosa Booth, performing as Matilda, delivered a standout portrayal filled with charm, intelligence, and emotional depth. Special recognition is given to all students involved, whether on stage, backstage, in technical roles, or supporting the production behind the scenes, their creativity and collaboration were central to the show’s success.

This production represents a significant step forward in The Skipton Academy’s cultural journey. As the first of many future performances planned for this new chapter, Matilda: Change My Story sets a proud foundation for a vibrant and ambitious future in the performing arts.
