Transition Specific Questions
What time will students arrive and be dismissed on their transition day?
Students will be expected to arrive at 9am and will be dismissed at 3pm.
Are students expected to wear uniform on the two transition days?
No. Students are expected to arrive in their non-uniform clothing on both days.
General Question
Q: What time does school start and finish?
A: The school day typically starts at 8:45 AM and finishes at 3:15 PM.
Q: What time does the gate open for students?
A: Gates usually open around 8:15 AM, giving students time to get to their form rooms calmly before registration.
Q: When do break times happen?
A: Break time is usually mid-morning, around 10:15 AM, and lunch is typically around 12:40 PM. Year 7’s will go to lunch before other students to give them more time
Q: Are students allowed to leave school at lunchtime?
A: No — all students must stay on site during the entire school day, including lunch.
Q: Can children stay inside when the weather is bad?
A: Yes, we provide indoor spaces where students can shelter and stay safe in poor weather.
Q: What happens if a student gets lost?
A: Staff and older students are always available to help. Year 7s are given maps, and the first weeks are fully supported with guided movement between classes.
Lessons, Uniform & Equipment
Q: Where do students get changed for PE?
A: Students change in the designated boys’ or girls’ PE changing rooms next to the gyms.
Q: Do they stay with their form for all lessons?
A: Students remain with their form group for most lessons in Year 7, but for some subject will be in mixed groups but within their band
Q: When will we receive a uniform and kit list?
A: This information is available on the website and also in the transition booklet
Q: What footwear is appropriate?
A: For general school use, black leather or polishable shoes are required. Students can also wear plain black trainers with no visible or different coloured marking. For PE, appropriate sports trainers are needed.
Q: Do students buy their own stationery?
A: Yes, a basic list is available on the school website. Some items can also be purchased from school such as a scientific calculator.
Q: Will the teachers be strict?
A: Our teachers have high expectations and clear boundaries, but they are also incredibly supportive. We focus on fairness, consistency, and helping every student succeed.
Lunch & Food
Q: How do lunches work? Do students need cash?
A: Our lunch system is cashless. Money is added to a student’s account online, and they use a card to pay at the till.
Q: What’s the average cost of lunch?
A: A typical lunch meal costs around £2.50 to £3.60, depending on choices.
Q: What are the school dinners like?
A: We offer a range of hot meals, vegetarian options, sandwiches, and snacks. Menus rotate regularly, and healthy eating is encouraged.
Clubs, Activities & Trips
Q: What after-school clubs are available?
A: A wide variety — including football, netball, drama, art, chess, and homework club. Clubs are promoted early in the term, and students are encouraged to get involved.
Q: Is there a drama club / music class / football club / running club?
A: Yes to all of the above. Clubs vary by term, and more information will be shared in September.
Q: What school trips do Year 7s go on?
A: Year 7s can take part in local enrichment trips, and residential’s. Larger trips, like the ski trip, world challenge and international trips are usually offered later (e.g. Year 8 or 9).
Q: How many nights is the ski trip?
A: Usually 5–6 nights, including travel days. Further details are given closer to the trip date.
Q: Will costs for trips be shared early?
A: Absolutely. We try to give plenty of notice and offer payment plans where possible.
Transport & Access
Q: Is there a school bus?
A: Yes, there are local bus routes that serve the school. Full transport information is available on the bus operator sites and on the North Yorkshire website, including route numbers and times.
Q: Is there a bus from Carleton?
A: Check North Yorkshire transport services for route specific information.
Q: Where do parents drop children off?
A: There is a designated drop-off zone by the Craven Leisure Centre for morning drop-offs.
Q: If a school bus doesn’t arrive until late (e.g., 4 PM), can students wait safely?
A: Yes, students can wait in the library and complete their homework or join an after school club until their transport arrives.
Miscellaneous
Q: Do you get a map?
A: Yes — students will receive a basic school map to help navigate in the first few weeks.
Q: What colour are the lanyards?
A: Year 7 students will receive a lanyard in their designated year colour (Green) — these help staff quickly identify year groups.
Q: Do students carry bags all day or have lockers?
A: Students carry their bags with them for the duration of the day.
Q: Will students see their Year 8 friends?
A: Yes during break and lunch.
Q: Do people get coloured overlays?
A: Yes, students with dyslexia or visual stress can access overlays if recommended. The SEND team will ensure needs are met.
Q: When will we find out about form groups?
A: Form group information is usually shared just before the Transition Days in July.
Q: How much homework will Year 7 get?
A: Students can expect light, regular homework — around 30–60 minutes per night. Homework increases gradually as they settle in.
